This four-bedroom home overlooks Matheson Bay out toward the Pacific Ocean. It has direct access to a private beach 220 feet below via a cable car. The home has a core of public spaces and two wings for parent and children at opposite ends of the core. Each wing contains bedrooms, lounge, and office/studio space.
In addition to the design of the house the brief included extensive terraces, balconies, several water features, swimming pool and spa, as well as a dry sauna. The water features are used to create separation between public and private gardens and terraces. The sauna is built to disappear into the ground using a reflecting pool roof which water falls over the edge to provide cooling after the sauna experience. A separate building houses storage and the cable car. The master bedroom, office and guest bedrooms have cantilevered balconies allowing dramatic views over the cliff face to the beach below.
As the property is outside the city, it is self reliant on rainwater as the sole water source. Large flat roofs collect rainwater through a filtration system and into substantial storage tanks under the four-car garage. Given the sensitive location the home is clad in natural stone, cedar and local brick. Extensive glazing allows light to flood the interiors while large overhangs shelter exposed areas.
