The Lodge Complete!
The Lodge at Mallard’s Landing is a 124 unit assisted living project in Gig Harbor Washington. Completed earlier this spring by DRK Development the project is now open for occupancy.

The site, adjacent to a designated wetland area, provided a number of constraints that needed to be addressed. These constraints also provide a tremendous setting for the project. The 100 assisted living unit main building is located near the center of the site and contains all the services and amenities needed for an assisted living community. This project can cater to residents with many different levels of capability. Separating the main building from the wetlands area are twenty-four cottages for residents that can live more independently.

Sympathetic to the natural surroundings a lodge motif was utilized in the design of the project. The main building entry is punctuated with an exposed timber framed porte-cochére. Details utilized at the main entry are carried throughout the building and soaring space created by the porte-cochére serves as a prelude to the open volumes of the common areas within. More...

Design Competition Outcome
We made our way to the design competition to see a gallery full of backyard cottage designs. Thirty Five architecture firms entered the competition with thirty five very similar concepts. There was a wide range of presentations styles that included everything from sketches to realisitic renderings. The judges soaked in every detail of these all too similar projects to award some best in show prizes. Most projects had a 'modular' theme to them, and the selected winners ended up being those who seemed to best describe their project using narrative text. Though we didn't receive an award, we are very proud of our entry. Click the images below to see them a little larger. Soon we will add a link to the Method Homes website showcasing all the design competition projects.

Design Competition
TSA Architects is entering a design competition for Backyard Cottages hosted by Method Homes and Infinity Red real estate. The design is for a prefabricated or modular 'mother-in-law' style home to be placed in backyards of residences per Seattle's new Backyard Cottages Ordinance. The main focus of the challenge is to raise awareness about backyard cottages as a solution to increase desity in Seattle. The event announcing the winners will take place on May 24th at 6pm at SPACE Design Collective located at 7601 Greenwood Ave. N., Suite 103, Seattle, WA. The winner will be showcased in June at Seattle's 2010 Green Festival.

  • TSA Welcomes J. Thomas McDonald
TSA Architects is pleased to announce the addition of J. Thomas (Thom) McDonald to our staff. Thom brings 25 years of experience to TSA Architects, primarily in the areas of residential and commercial interior architecture. A graduate of Washington State University, Thom has spent the majority of his career practicing architecture in New Zealand. With the downturn in the world economy Thom decided to go ahead and close his business in Auckland and return to the Seattle area where he first started as an intern. Thom notes that while the skyline has changed since he was last here the issues we are facing in the built environment are very much the same and in fact appear to be the same worldwide.

Thom joins us as a Senior Designer and brings with him a very strong design flair which will complement the projects at TSA Architects, pllc. Because New Zealand is so strongly influenced by Great Brittan Thom through his experience there brings with him a European design perspective.
